The Belt Buckle

I was in college. I was 21. Honestly, I remember the night in fragments. They don’t piece together perfectly. But the fragments are definitely vivid.

I remember him handing me shot after shot of grain alcohol... with enthusiasm. I remember getting new pours before I even finished the last. It never crossed my mind that I was being groomed for vulnerability. The window between each shot got tighter and tighter. And at some point, it was all too much. I remember stumbling to the bathroom. I remember pulling the door behind me but never hearing it close. I remember feeling him behind me before I could even turn around and see why the door didn't close.

The Costs of "Thick": Eating for your Body Type!

It’s time to talk about booties again and that dreaded word “thick”. No, but really. We are a booty-obsessed generation and honestly, it’s getting a bit old. I’m tired of the word. I’m tired of seeing everybody’s booty. But more than anything I am tired of the sacrifices I see women of color making to “get” the infamous “thick” body and “big booty”.

This month on the Melanin Well blog, we’ve discussed the surgical sacrifices women are making but today we are going to talk about a sacrifice that is much more common and accepted in our community; nutritional sacrifices. [You can find the previous post on the surgical sacrifices here - https://www.melaninwell.com/blog/2018/11/2/comparison-syndrome-your-wellness].

So What is the Best Fitness Approach During the Holiday Season?

I know I constantly preach self-love but when I saw this photo I was like “ewwww”. That is me being real. That was my initial reaction. I don’t want to use the f word but I thought to myself for a moment that I looked kind of fat. I don’t care how much “self-love” and self-worth you have, we all have those moments. We can be our biggest critics and comparison syndrome often is present most as we compare ourselves to older versions of ourselves. When I thought fat, I didn’t actually mean fat... I meant not as lean as last year.
